The Kebbi State House of Assembly is working with major stakeholders on the review of the state’s Penal Code Law (2021).
Hon. Barr. Faruku Abubakar Maisudan, member representing Suru Constituency who disclosed this during stakeholders’ engagement and review meeting held in Birnin Kebbi said the Assembly is committed to updating state laws in line with current realities and ensuring effective and fair justice delivery.
Maisudan represented the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Usman Muhammad Ankwe, during the meeting organized by the Rule of Law and Empowerment Initiative, also known as Partners West Africa Nigeria which brought together lawmakers, legal experts, and civil society groups to identify gaps in the current penal code and propose necessary reforms.
“The ongoing penal code review is part of a broader effort to modernize the state’s legal system and strengthen coordination among the legislature, judiciary, and executive arms of government,” he said.
Maisudan, who chairs the House Committee on Justice and Judiciary, noted that the current Assembly has undertaken several legislative measures aimed at reforming the justice system.
According to him, the bills already considered by the Assembly, including: The Kebbi State Justice Sector Reform Bill, The Law Reform Commission Bill, The Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) (Amendment) Bill, and The Child Rights Protection (Amendment) Bill.
