Crime & SecurityNewsNigeriaCOAS Says Army Witnessed Large Surrenders from Boko Haram, ISWAP

Nigeria has witnessed a significant increase in the surrender of terrorists, following the Nigerian Army’s relentless efforts to counter Boko Haram and its rival faction Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) insurgents.

Army Chief, Olufemi Oluyede, made this announcement at the opening of the 2024 Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Annual Conference in Abuja on Monday.

Mr Oluyede urged soldiers to strengthen their resolve in protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

He also stated that the purpose of the conference was to assess the army’s performance for the year and lay plans for the upcoming year.

“I am determined to ensure that under my leadership, the Nigerian army remains steadfast and unwavering in its commitment to addressing the challenges facing our great nation,” he said.

“Our determination to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity must be stronger than ever, and we will relentlessly pursue excellence in ensuring the safety and well-being of all Nigerians.”

The Army Chief added that the army would focus on developing innovative strategies to combat terrorism and other security threats in the country.

He also called on operational commanders to engage their troops actively, ensuring they remain motivated and prepared to face challenges head-on.

Mr Oluyede outlined that ongoing operations such as HADIN KAI and FASAN YAMMA had intensified in the North-East and North-West regions targeting the emerging Lakurawa terror group.

“We have increased the tempo of ongoing operations against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping for ransom, and wanton killings across the six geopolitical zones of the country,” Oluyede stated.

“So far, we have had a large-scale surrender of terrorists and the submission of a substantial cache of arms and ammunition.”
