A former senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the last Eight Senate has called on the Nigerian traditional medicine practitioners to dive into research for the vaccine of COVID-19.

Sani called on the herbalists on Tuesday vis his verified Twitter handle @ShehuSani. He said “Our herbalists should delve into research on finding a vaccine for #COVID19 rather than so much concentration on production and marketing of ‘manpower’ drugs.

The first politician who first suggested the use of the herbal remedies was the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde. Governor Makinde claimed that he uses herbal ingredients for quick recovery.

On Tuesday, April 8, the Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, says the Federal Government will consider serious traditional medicine in the treatment of COVID-19.

The minister said “We will look into every assertion. Some people say they have herbs and some others say they have concoctions. Only for those that are serious, the department of traditional, complementary, and alternative medicine in the ministry of health will look into their claims and we will not throw away any suggestion”.

April 7, VOANews reported that Zimbabwe’s government authorized traditional herbalists to treat coronavirus patients, although health experts are curious and are urging for extreme caution.

April 5, NBCNews reported that China is encouraging herbal remedies to treat COVID-19. But scientists warn against it.
