President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the composition of a Power Sector Reform Coordination Working Group, to coordinate the power reforms of various levels of government, a statement by Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, Kaduna State Governor, discloses.

The Chairman of the Committee on Power Sector Reforms and Distribution Company Ownership, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, said the working group which would meet every week had commenced work and would bring all power reform efforts under the leadership of the Vice President for an effective power sector.

The statement partly reads:

“This new presidential working group will coordinate ad-hoc committee and other efforts on a national scale, and report progress fortnightly to Mr. President.

“The key objective of the working group is to harmonise various efforts by the Federal Government and the 36 states, through the National Economic Council (NEC), on power sector reform and to oversee the design and implementation of a well-coordinated roadmap for the sector.

“The group will also ensure that ongoing Federal and State initiatives are in sync with the Presidential Power Initiative being implemented with the German Government and Siemens and Infrastructure investments of the TCN and the Ministry of Power.”

The working group will also support financing initiatives of the World Bank Group, DFID and other development partners.

Members of the group include: Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, representing the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the National Economic Council; Mallam Abba kyari, Chief of Staff to the President and leads the German Government/Siemens Initiative; Engr Saleh Mamman, Minister of Power; Hajiya Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning; Mr. Godwin Emefiele, Central Bank of Nigeria Governor; Ahmad Zakari, Special Adviser to the President on Infrastructure and the Secretary of the Working Group.
