The Kaduna State Government has informed occupants of the Kasuwan Barchi market in Tudun-Wada of Kaduna Central Local Government of the state to leave the area in three days.

The eviction notice which was issued by the Director-General of the Kaduna State Urban Planning and Development Authority, KASUPDA, Ismail Umar-Dikko, to the occupants of the market on Friday, is to pave way for the Urban Renewal Projects by Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

Part of the notice reads:

“In view of the renewal Projects by the Kaduna State Government (upgrading of Kasuwar Barchi market), you are hereby given three (3) days from the date of receipt of this notice to remove ALL your valuables and vacate the site.

“Failure to comply with the above directive will leave the Authority with no option than to demolish/remove your stall at your expense, according to section 60 of the Kaduna State Urban and regional Planning Law of 2018.”

While some people hailed the move by the government, others condemned it, saying three days was too short to vacate and resettle.

The Kaduna State Urban Renewal Project was launched in June 2019, by Governor Nasir El-Rufai. According to him, “Kaduna Renewal seeks to make Kaduna a friendly home to its residents, a safe place to live in, equipped to support and promote the livelihoods of our citizens.”

With the demolitions that followed the launching of the programme, many say it bears semblance to the time Mr. El-Rufai was the Federal Capital Territory Minister, when many properties were brought down.
