Emir Sanusi II was accused of “breaching part 3 section (a-e) of the Kano State Emirate Law 2019 and which if left unchecked will destroy the good and established image of the Kano Emirate.”

The Government said it consulted all stakeholders and “in compliance with part 3 and 13 of the Kano State Emirate Law 2019 and other reasons stated above,” arrived at the decision.

“The removal was reached in order to safeguard the sanctity, culture, tradition, religion and prestige of the Kano Emirate over a thousand years,” the government stated.

The Governor of the state called on the public to remain calm, law abiding and to go about their normal businesses. A new Emir of Kano Emirate will soon be appointed, the government said.

Meanwhile, before the dethronement of Emir Sanusi was announced, the members of the Kano State House of Assembly engaged in a free-for-all fight over a plan to submit a report recommending investigation over an alleged violation of culture, tradition and religion by the deposed Emir.

The fight broke out when Hamisu Chidari, Deputy Speaker and the chairman of the committee investigating the petition against Emir Sanusi, said he wanted to make an observation concerning the report to be submitted.

But he was countered by Lawal Hussain of the PDP who said any comment about the investigation should wait until the committee had submitted its report on the set date, Wednesday 11, March 2020. Other members took sides and then a fight broke out.

Attempts were made by some members to snatch the mace, but the sergeant-at-arms prevented this. The speaker intervened by adjourning sitting. When the house resumed sitting, the situation seem calm and other matters were considered.

Report says that the Emir of Kano’s Palace was barricaded by the police immediately the dethronement of the Emir was announced and the palace guards were withdrawn. Several residents of Kano were also seen around the palace.

There are speculations that Sanusi’s successor may be Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, son of the late emir of Kano and the current Emir of Bichi.
