Former Emir Sanusi may soon be freed as Justice Anwuli Chikere of the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered his release from house arrest in Awe, Nasarawa State.

The interim order was given in a ruling following an ex parte application moved by his lead counsel, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) on Friday.

The judge ordered that the ruling be served on the respondents to the application which include the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu; the Director-General of the Department of State Service, Yusuf Bichi; The Attorney-General of Kano State, Ibrahim Muktar; and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN).

Further hearing on the case would continue on March 26.

The ruling is coming following the embattled Emir’s removal and banishment to Awe in Nasarawa State which his legal team threatened to challenge in court if he was not released within 24 hours. In a fundamental human rights suit, Mr. Sanusi asked the court to void his banishment.

The former Emir in suit no: FHC/ABJ/CS/375/2020, asked the court to restore his human dignity, personal liberty, freedom of association and movement in Nigeria apart from Kano State.

Meanwhile, the Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai visited the former Emir on Friday afternoon. Before the visit, the governor had appointed Mr. Sanusi to the board of Kaduna State Investment Promotion Agency and offered him a Chancellorship position at Kaduna State University.
