An explosion has occurred at Abule Ado in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos.

The explosion which occurred on Sunday morning at about 9am could be heard as far as Surulere, Ijegun, Egbeda, Iyana Ipaja, FESTAC and Satellite Town.

Residents said their houses shook and their roofs were blown off. There are also reports of people trapped in buildings that collapsed due to the impact of the explosion.

In a tweet, the Federal Fire Service said it was on the issue.

“We are in touch with out men in Fire Stations around Badagry and Festac, we are trying to gather more information as regards the reported explosion in Lagos State, Nigeria. We are on it.”

The aftermath of the explosion is one of confusion and images of properties worth millions of naira destroyed. Residential buildings, schools and churches destroyed. Roofs collapsed and windows shattered.

People residing in the area said it was caused by a gas pipeline and that pipeline vandals may have caused it.

However, Ibrahim Farinloye, acting coordinator, Lagos territorial of the National Emergency Management Agency, said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria that contrary to the claims by people that the explosion was caused by pipeline vandals, the explosion may have started from a factory located in the area.

“From the information given by officials of the Lagos State Fire Service who are on the ground, the explosion is not connected to pipeline but might have occurred in a factory located in the Abule Ado area,” he said.

He added that more information as regards the cause of the explosion would be made available soon.

Social media videos show Abule Ado area covered in black smoke and people running away from the scene.

As at the time of filing this report, the West African Pilot News could not verify claims of casualties.
