Residents of Adamawa State are now groaning, alleging that they were put in a state of unfathomable hardship and hunger by the lockdown order which entered day 4 amidst a dearth of any palliative measure.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has on March 30 announced the lockdown order which came into effect midnight of March 31, 2020.

But four days into the lockdown, residents say they did not get any relief package from either the state or the federal government.

An operator of tricycle in Yola, Malam Samaila Magaji told our correspondent that he is not finding the situation funny as he has to beg for food from neighbors before he can feed his family of five.

“I have to go out on a daily basis to hustle in order to provide food on the table. Since this order began, I have remained at home and living off kind-spirited individuals and neighbours.

“I have to virtually beg for food in some instances to feed my wife and her three children. I’m not finding this funny at all,” he said.

Another resident of the state capital Mr. Benjamin Moses carpeted the government “for its unsympathetic posture,” noting that while the government wanted to solve a small problem, it ended up creating a big problem for the teeming people.

” In trying to solve a small challenge, the government created a bigger one which affected many citizens.

“As the government tries to solve a nonexistent challenge of tackling the so-called COVID-19, it only ended up creating more malnourishment, hunger, and hardship.

“We are now facing HUVID-20 instead of COVID-19 and in all honesty, the HUVID-20 is more disastrous as it is wreaking more havoc to thousands of residents.

“In saner climes, government is providing stimulus to the economy and palliatives to individuals but here the government just left us to device means of survival in the wake of this unfriendly policy,” he said.

For now, the state government COVID-19 committee continued to receive donations and assistance but it’s not yet clear when it will start releasing or distributing the assistance realized.

Namdas set the pace

In the meantime, member of the House of Representatives, representing Toungo, Ganye, Jada and Mayo Belwa Federal constituency  Abdulrazak Namdas was reported to have distributed foodstuff  in his constituency as palliative.

With this, the lawmaker is first to reach out to his constituents in the state in the midst of the prevailing global health challenge of the Coronavirus Pandemic.

He said that the gesture was part of measures taken to ameliorate the hardship his constituents are going through as a result of the lockdown of the state which affects businesses and other activities.

“With the breakdown of the coronavirus globally which has affected individuals and even government revenue generation, we think it is ideal for us as the representatives of the people to at this particular period reach out to our constituents with such gesture.

” I know we are in the opposition in the state which makes it difficult for our party officials to get any sort of help from the state government, and that is why we have to play our parts and ensure that we help where necessary.”
