Residents of Toungo Local Government area of Adamawa state, northeast Nigeria has no course to smile as the contract for the electrification of the town reached nearly completion stage, state officials confirm.
Toungo carved out of Ganye LGA in 1996 is the only Local Government Area (LGA) headquarters in Nigeria without electricity.
Speaking on the project, the state commissioner for Rural Infrastructure and Community Development Abdullahi Prambe said that‘’ the project awarded by this present administration has so far reached nearly completion stage.
‘’The essence is to connect these neglected communities with national grid like other local government areas in Nigeria.
‘’As might be aware Toungo, which was carved out of old Ganye, remains the only local government headquarters in Nigeria that has no electricity,” he said.
He noted that‘’ We focused much rural infrastructure just as the government blocked all leakages and contracts’ abandonment plaguing our system.
‘’Some contractors were ordered to go back to sites and complete the shady works said to have been completed.
‘’In 21 local government we were been able to at least touched in rural infrastructure either on feeder roads or rural electrification; we always monitored and evaluates works done to ensure standard,’’ said he.
Prambe who doubles as Secretary of the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, said that ‘’the PDP-led administration in the state since its inception, positively impacted on some areas such as the civil service, citizens’ welfare, education, security water provision, and rural infrastructure and community development projects.’’
