Professor Ibrahim Gambari, the newly appointed Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, says he reports to the President and not directly to the nation.

He said this while addressing journalists following the confirmation of his appointment at the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday.

Responding to a question about what Nigerians should expect from him as the Chief of Staff, Mr. Gambari, according to press reports, said: “I have not started, so I will find out and maybe… I don’t report directly to the nation; I report directly to the president.”

He said his guiding principle would be to serve “the president to best of my ability” and that President Buhari needs “my loyalty, competence, and support.”

Former Chief of Staff, the late Abba Kyari, was reputed to be the most influential person in the presidency. The position of chief of staff is not constitutionally recognised in Nigeria. Beginning from former President Olusegun Obasanjo, successive governments, except the late Umaru Musa Yar’adua, appointed chief of staff.

“I want to thank the president of the federal republic for giving me this opportunity to serve him and of the country,” Prof. Gambari said.
