Following the ban Lagos State government imposed on Okada and tricycle operating on major roads in the State in February, the government plans to roll out what it calls First Mile and Last Mile (FMLM) mobility solutions to replace the banned means of transport.

This was revealed by the State’s Commissioner for Transportation, Frederick Oladeinde, at the 2020 ministerial press briefing at Ikeja.

“Following the restriction of motorcycles and tricycles for commuter operations in some areas in the metropolis, the government is working on implementing a First Mile and Last Mile (FMLM) mobility solution.

“We have identified 285 last-mile routes within the seven reform initiative zones across Lagos. We have developed bus specifications and shared same with potential bus manufacturers. We expect these to be rolled out in the next two months,” Mr Oladeinde said.

The ban of motorcycles and tricycles in Lagos caused hardship for many residents who depended on them for first and last mile commuting. Many riders lost their source of livelihoods as a result of the ban. It also resulted in the close down of motorcycle hailing technology firms operating in the state.

The government blamed motorcycles and tricycles for high rates of accidents and crime in the state. The Lagos State government said Okada and tricycles were not part of the transport architecture of the state.
