The Ogun State government has announced a relaxation of the lockdown it imposed a week ago.

Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed this in a statement, adding that it was not a full re-opening of the economy but a mere easing of the lockdown which would allow residents more time to conduct their businesses.

“Relaxation windows will now be observed on all 5 working days (Monday to Friday), but the FG-directed curfew from 8pm (night) to 6am (morning) remains in place on these days. Total lockdown will be maintained on Saturday and Sunday,” Mr Abiodun stated.

The governor maintained that all advisories regarding the use of facemasks, public transport and interstate travels were still in place. He added that all forms of gatherings that exceed 20 people remain banned.

“This further easing of the lockdown will allow us all more time to run our businesses and return to an almost usual life, but only if we follow the guidelines above.

“This reminds us that this is mere easing and not a full reopening of the economy, so I encourage as many of us that can continue to work and meet online and remotely from home to continue to do so,” the governor said.

The state government advised workplaces in Ogun to comply with the guidelines for preventing and controlling COVID-19, issued by the Ministeries of Health and Industry, Trade and Investments. To ensure compliance with the guidelines, the government said it had set up a task force that would conduct random checks on industries.

The governor announced that the state had tested 1,562 people of the 10,900 screened and added that the Molecular Laboratory in Sagamu, which he said was the first fully state-funded laboratory in Nigeria had been accredited by the National Centre for Disease Control and had increased the state’s testing capacity to 650.

He noted that about 235 violators had been arrested and prosecuted, while 64 vehicles had been impounded for defying travel restrictions and curfew order.

“We will not condone acts of violation even under the guise of work, as these are a threat to our collective wellness,” Mr Abiodun concluded.
