A 16-year-old girl, Tina Ezekwe, who was allegedly shot dead by policemen at the Iyana Oworo area of Lagos on Monday, sparked uproar on social media on Friday following a video released by Oworo TV on Twitter showing Tina’s lifeless body being carried by an angry crowd.

The video prompted #JusticeforTina on the microblogging platform and celebrities, including Adesua Etomi and Beverly Naya, joined the call for justice for the girl who was planning to write WAEC exams.

Media reports citing witnesses said policemen deployed from Bariga Police Division, shot a bus driver and Tina — who was standing by the roadside — while trying to implement a curfew imposed by the Federal government.

An eyewitness told BBC Pidgin that the policeman who shot Tina was drunk, adding that he shot the driver because he refused to give N200 bribe before being released.

“When we gathered to harass the police for shooting the driver, he shot at the crowd. A bullet hit Tina,” the witness said.

Ezekwe King said his sister was hit by a bullet while she was at her mother’s shop selling pepper and fruits, according to BBC Pidgin.

“When my sister was shot, I told the policeman that he had shot my sister, but he did not answer,” Ezekwe said. “I quickly rushed Tina to the hospital that night, she was given first aid. Doctors said she had lost a lot of blood. She died at the hospital on Thursday.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, in a statement said two policemen – Theophilus Otobo and Oguntoba Olamigoke – had been arrested. He revealed that Musa Yakubu, 35, was injured at the point and a stray bullet hit Tina. Tina died two days later at the hospital.

“The lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has ordered an in-depth investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Tina Ezekwe, 17. The bullet pierced through the upper side of her left laps. She was rushed to hospital by a team of policemen led by the Divisional Police Officer,” the statement by the police read.

The police sympathised with the families of the deceased person and assured that the perpetrators of the act would be prosecuted.

“Two police officers suspected to have carried out the shooting were arrested and subjected to internal disciplinary proceedings. If found culpable, they will be charged to court,” Elkana said.
