Following a two-and-a-half meeting held to review the preparedness of schools, the Ogun State government has postponed the resumption date for some categories of students it declared a week ago.
The class categories are Primary Six, Junior Secondary School III and Senior Secondary School III students.
The Chief Press Secretary to the State Governor, Mr Taiwo Adisa, said the decision was reached following visits to schools by the Commissioner for Education, Barrister Olasunkanmi Olaleye and experts from the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) to determine the COVID-19 protocols put in place for schools.
The team found that schools needed one week to test-run handwashing points and other measures, Mr Adisa said.
“By the new arrangement, teachers are to resume to schools on Monday June 29, 2020, while students in critical classes including Primary 6, JSS3 and SS3 will resume a week later on July 6, 2020.
“As of Monday, June 22, no fewer than 372 Heads of Schools have been trained by the EOC on the management of the COVID-19 containment procedures, while each of the schools is to appoint an incident Manager, who will ensure compliance with the approved COVID-19 protocol.
“Each student is expected to wear face masks, while the schools are to prepare well laid out handwashing spots to guarantee regular washing of hands by the students and teachers,” the statement read.
The State said by July 15, it would be decided whether other classes could resume or made to wait till the new session in September 2020.
The WAP recalls that the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, had described the Ogun State government’s plan to re-open schools as insensitive. The Minister said at the time, that the State ranked fourth in States with active cases.
