Four local government areas in Lagos State have been marked as being at risk of flood this year.
The local government areas include Lagos Mainland, Mushin, Ibeju-Lekki, and Ikorodu.
According to the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tunji Bello, the areas will witness more high-intensity rainfall between now (July) and September. He urged residents of the low lying areas to relocate during this period to avoid any untoward incident which may come with flooding and the resultant loss of lives property.
Drawing from the Annual Flood Outlook by the Hydrological Services Agency in May 2020, the Commissioner identified 14 other local government areas that may experience flooding. They include Lagos Island, Alimosho, Amuwo Odofin, Ikeja, Kosofe, Eti-Osa, Apapa, Ojo, Oshodi/Isolo, Agege, Ifako, Ijaiye, Badagry, Surulere and Ajeromi-Ifelodun.
Mr Bello said the Ministry had intensified efforts to clean and clear drainages across the State.
Investigation shows that some traders, especially in Mushin, dump waste from their daily sales in the drains, thus inhibiting the free flow of water into its channels, the Commissioner said, warning residents to desist from clogging drainage channels with refuse as anyone caught would be made to face the wrath of the law.
