The arrest came barely two weeks after a series of joint security meetings by Nigerian and Cameroonian security operatives over banditry and kidnappings around border communities in Maiha border town.

Those arrested include Umaru Shehu, Isyaku Dauda, Hammadu Yusuf, Beto Yusuf, Mohammed Abubakar, Mohammed Jao, Adamu Jaunga and Mohammed Ali.

Confirming the arrest, chairman of Maiha Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Dr. Idi Aminu, said that the eight were arrested near the border with Cameroon.

“Cameroon security operatives first arrested one of them and his arrest led to the arrest of others who all confessed to have perpetrated kidnappings of many people in the state.

“The armed dealer who supplies arms and ammunition to them is from Song Local Government, and he is popularly known as the chairman. I tell you that security operatives and vigilantes are on the trail to arrest their overall boss.

“Information available to me says these people operate as an institution with even an association,” he said.

The local government boss said the arrested suspects had were handed over to Nigerian Police for further investigations.

For now, the state police command is yet to comment as efforts to get police spokesman proved abortive as at the time of filing this report.
