Residents of Yola and its environs now sleep with two eyes open as gangs of robbers dressed in hunters and vigilante uniforms burst and ransacked about 10 houses at Ummare in Yolde-Pate ward of Yola, the Adamawa state capital in the early hours of Saturday, residents have said.

A resident of the area who simply identified himself as Musa said the gang went from house to house forcing doors open to rob residents of money, handsets, televisions and other valuables.

A vigilante in the area identified as Mallam Isa who approached them thinking they were colleagues was attacked by the gang who machete him all over.

Isa had to be rushed to the hospital by the ward head whose family house was also raided by the gang.

Residents said the gang operated between 1.30 am to 3 am, and while the operation lasted some people made calls to Yolde-Pate Police station for help but there was no response.

“Up to this moment as I speak the police have not showed up,” one of the victims who spoke under anonymity said.

The residents who recently experienced the first kidnapping incident in the area, urged for more security vigilance, and the need for security agencies particularly the police and supporting groups like vigilante and Adamawa Hunters Association to do something urgently on the new practice of using hunters and vigilante uniforms by the criminals to rob people.

They suggested that all hunters and vigilante involved in patrols should restrict their movements in their respective areas of assignment as a solution to contain criminals using uniforms to wonder around various wards to rob people.

When contacted, the Adamawa Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Yahaya Nguroje, said he was not aware of the incident.

“As I speak to you now I am not in town and yet to get briefing on the incident,” Nguroje said.
