Crime & SecurityNewsNigeriaSerial Killer Escape: Seyi Makinde Demands Rearrest

The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has asked the police to arrest the suspected serial killer, Sunday Sodipe, who escaped from the custody of the police a month after he was arrested for the murder of about six people at Akinyele area of Ibadan.

The West African pilot had reported that the police on August 16, announced that Sodipe escaped from its custody on August 11, and urged members of the public to be on the lookout for the suspect.

However, the Oyo state government through Governor Seyi Makinde’s Special Adviser on security, Fatai Owoseni, said at a security town hall meeting that police officers whose negligence resulted to the escape of the suspect should be dealt with, the Nation reported.

“Governor Seyi Makinde is really concerned and pained, and has informed the police hierarchy of his displeasure on the security situation, especially in this axis. He has told the police to ensure that they do whatever it will take them to re-arrest the suspect,” Owoseni said.

The Oyo Police Public Relations Officer, Olugbenga Fadeyi, stated that officers whose custody the suspect escaped were being interrogated, according to the Punch.

“Efforts have been intensified to arrest him. All other suspects are in custody. Those from whose care he escaped are being interrogated,” Fadeyi said.

Meanwhile, others have called on the police to apprehend the suspected serial killer in order to prevent more killings in the area.

The Chairman of the state council of the Nigeria Union Journalists, Ademola Babalola said that “we are disturbed with the news of the escape of Sunday Shodipe. That is why we have to come here. Police custody should be the safest place to keep a suspect.”

A lawmaker at the Oyo State House of Assembly, representing Ogbomoso north state constituency and Chairperson of the house committee on Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Bimbo Oladeji, asked the Inspector General of police to pressure the state commissioner of police to investigate the escape of the suspect, the Punch reported.

“It is an inversion of logic that a 19-year-old suspect escaped from the most secure place in the state, hence the call for thorough investigation,” Oladeji said and suggested that placing a bounty on the suspect would ensure a quick arrest.
