The Chairman of Ikere Local Government in Ekiti State, Femi Ayodele, has been suspended by the State House of Assembly for sponsoring presidential campaign poster for Kayode Fayemi without authorisation.

The campaign poster was widely shared on social media, prompting Governor Fayemi to dissociate himself from it. Denying knowledge of the campaign poster, the governor said he was focused on actualising his promises to the people of Ekiti.

The poster read: Support His Excellency Dr. John Kayode Fayemi for President 2023.

On Friday, during plenary, lawmakers unanimously suspended Mr Ayodele pending investigation. The motion to sanction the council chairman was moved by the Majority Leader, Gboyega Aribisogan and supported by Tajudeen Akingbolu, member representing Ekiti West Constituency 1.

Some lawmakers who contributed to the debate said that the Chairman’s action was an embarrassment to the Governor. Others said that Mr Ayodele’s action goes against provisions of the Electoral Act, 2010 as amended.

“This also serve as a note of caution to political appointees, government functionaries, political associates and groups to operate within the ambit of decency and steer clear of actions that are capable of distracting the government, the party and the Governor,” Fayemi said through his Chief Press Secretary, Yinka Oyebode on Thursday.
