Basic and Secondary schools may reopen from Sept. 21

Launches COVID-19 care pack for patients on home-based care

The Lagos State government has approved the reopening of tertiary institutions for academic activities from September 14.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this known in a press briefing on Saturday at the State House in Marina.

The government had shut down academic activities across all levels of education in March in order to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the State. Recently, students in Senior Secondary School three were permitted to return to school to write the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)

Lagos has the highest number of persons infected with COVID-19 in the country. The spread of the virus has declined and the State’s response to COVID-19 has improved, the government said, explaining why it reopened schools.

Mr Sanwo-Olu also said that Primary and Secondary schools which had been closed for six months, may be reopened “anytime from September 21, 2020”. He said that a definite resumption date was subject to the result of the analysis of the State’s response to the virus.

“However, the decision to re-open the basic and secondary schools is not cast in stone and is subject to a review of our ongoing modelling of the State’s response to the pandemic,” the Governor stated.

School administrators were instructed to adhere to the safety guidelines for COVID-19.

Mr Sanwo-Olu said that the government would decide on easing the lockdown on the tourism sector to before the end of September.

Meanwhile, the Governor launched COVID-19 care pack to be distributed free-of-charge to COVID-19 patients who opt for home-based care. Each pack contains medications, hand sanitizer, face masks and handy medical equipment – to check temperature.
