News5 dead, 30 Injured as Trailer Skipped-off in Adamawa

At least five (5) persons have been confirmed dead in an auto crash that occurred on Saturday on the Mayo-Belwa –Ganye road in Adamawa State, local officials ave said.

The accident reportedly happened after a trailer conveying cattle traders and their helpers -‘ yan –tike –boys’  skipped-off.

Eyewitnesses account said the accident  occurred at a sharp bend along Mayo-Belwa-Jada Road on Saturday morning, attributed it to ‘’ reckless and over speedy by two trailer-drivers.’’

‘’ We saw two trailers coming same direction in speedy manner; they were all trying to overtake each other, so on the process one of the driver lost control.

‘’ We only saw occupants of the trailer tumbling on the ground; three died instantly and many seriously with broken hands and legs.

‘’One of the victims had his head decapitated.

‘’ It’s very pathetic, this accident could have been avoided,’’ said an eye witness who simple identified himself as Mallam Jingi.

Also corroborating, Kabiru Baba-Kelly, information officer of Mayo-Belwa local government council had confirmed that, ‘’ the incident occurred at about 11:15 am this Saturday along Ganye road in a village calls Jilima.

‘’Two trailer drivers were over speeding during which one of the trailer skipped-off after losing control.

‘’ Both the dead bodies and those with injuries were hurriedly evacuated to mayo-Belwa cottage hospital.

‘’ Some were critically injured,’’ he said.

When contacted on phone the Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mayo-Belwa Unit, Aminu Ibrahim confirmed the death of five people as 30 sustained injuries.

Ibrahim who blamed the incident on reckless driving, said the bodies of the victims had been deposited at the Cottage Hospital mortuary in Mayo-Belwa, including the injured occupants.

‘’Besides the five persons, who lost their lives, 30  others severely injured are receiving treatment in hospital,’’ he said.
