The Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on Thursday addressed residents of the state over the unfortunate hijack of the peaceful #EndSARS protests by miscreants, leading to acts of violence, criminality and destruction of public and private properties.

Ugwuanyi acknowledged the resentments of the masses against brutality but condemned the acts of violence and criminality perpetrated by hoodlums; he described their actions as needless because violence has never solved societal problems but rather compounds them.

He however sympathized with victims who in the course of the mayhem sustained injury or have their properties damaged.

He further revealed that his administration has been responsive to the issues raised by the peaceful end SARS protesters, hence the inauguration of the judicial panel of inquiry on police brutality and extrajudicial killings in the state.

“The youths, students and civil society organizations, CSOs, are adequately represented in the panel,” he said.

“I therefore appeal most passionately to youths of Enugu involved in this mayhem to have a rethink, pull back and allow the measures we instituted to address our collective pains to play out,”

“Let us take back our hitherto peaceful Coal City from hijackers of the peaceful protests and perpetrators of violence and criminality who do not represent our collective wishes”.

The Governor then called on parents and guardians to restrain their wards from engaging in any unlawful conduct.

The traditional rulers, religious leaders and stakeholders he called on to help calm and restore peace in their communities.

“The 24-hour curfew imposed in the three Local Government Areas within the Enugu metropolis is still in place; Enugu East, Enugu North and Enugu South Local Government Areas,” Ugwuanyi reiterated.

Gov. Ugwuanyi concluded by reminding residents, “Enugu is our common heritage, our home and we deserve to live, work and rejoice in it”.

Recall that the 24 hours curfew was announced on Wednesday night but persons on essential services in the affected local governments such as health care workers, staff of Water Corporation, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), Fire Service, and Enugu State Emergency Management Agency, are exempted as they are allowed to attend to their duties.
