Police in Adamawa State have commenced investigation to fish out those behind the looting of government warehouse located at Kwanan Waya on the outskirt of Yola, state capital where relief items supplied as palliatives for COVID-19 pandemic were kept.

Hundreds of People on Sunday stormed the warehouse and carted away with the items to include cartons of noodles, spaghetti, salt and cooking oil.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Adamawa State Police Command DSP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje in an interview with West African Pilot News said the looters overpowered the police already drafted to prevent the miscreants from gaining entry following intelligent reports that, some people have plan to loot the government warehouse and some shops in the town.

“Based on the information filtered yesterday (Saturday) that some people have plans to ransack government warehouse and some shops, Police were drafted to guard the facility, but the large crowd overpowered the police personnel already on ground and forced themselves inside the warehouse.

“So far no arrest was made in connection with the looting, and nobody was injured or lost his life”. He said

Nguroje stated the Commissioner of Police has ordered full investigation into the matter to unravel the perpetrators with a view to prosecute them so as to serve as a deterrent to others.

Nguroje dismissed the claim that policemen and other security personnel on ground became onlookers while the looters had a field day.

“It is not true police were onlookers at the scene, police have tried their best to prevent them, but to no avail due to large crowd of people”. He said

PPRO called on parents to discipline their children not to partake in any act that will jeopardize the peace, stressing that it is an offence to break the law of the land.

Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary, Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), Dr Sulaiman Muhammad has lamented over the incident, saying the looters should have waited for government to distribute the items.

He explained that the government had already commenced the process for distribution and was making effort to secure items which were not supplied especially rice when the looters struck.

“We are yet to receive rice; there is no single bag of rice. We wanted to receive the remaining items including rice before we distributed them, but with what is happening in the country, we decided to share what is on ground immediately, we were about to commence distribution,” He added.
