The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has committed five billion naira (N5b) in the establishment of seven Academic Publishing Centres across Nigeria.

Alhaji Kashim Ibrahim Imam, the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the fund, who stated this during an assessment session with Heads of Tertiary Institutions in the North East, held at Moddibo Adama University of Technology MAUTECH Yola, explained that the purpose for the centres is to encourage academic and scholarly publications.

“The purpose of the visit was to hold consultations with Heads of Tertiary Institutions in the North East geo-political zone to evaluate impact of interventions by TETFund.

“Henceforth TETFund will not embark on any intervention that is less than one billion naira (N1b), the Fund has budgeted two hundred and fifty billion naira (N250b) to meet its target for 2021.

“TETFund has given the Federal Inland Revenue Service the mandate to collect up to five hundred billion naira (N500b) as revenue from tertiary institutions to meet the target for the incoming year”. He said

He expressed delight over the state of the Academic Publishing Centre for the North East, which is sited at MAUTECH Yola and assured that installations of sophisticated machines for publishing will be completed soon for the centre to commence operations.

Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Prof Suleiman Bogoro noted that the establishment of the publishing centres will meet the academic needs of the tertiary institutions and is designed to encourage research, journals and other academic publications.

In his remark, the Vice Chancellor, Moddibo Adama University of Technology MAUTECH Yola, Prof Liman Tukur appreciated the siting of the Academic Publishing Centre at the institution, pointing out that the potentials derivable will be used for the benefit of member schools.

Tukur said already the centre has taken off and called for urgent and pragmatic action to ensure adequate funding as well as management of the facility to enable it discharge its statutory mandate.

Convener of the meeting, Prof Riskuwa Shehu, represented by Prof Aishatu Iya Ahmed from University of Maiduguri noted that the publishing centre in the zone was established in 2015 and charged Heads of Tertiary Institutions in the zone to ensure its sustenance.
