Following the revocation of licenses of 52 broadcast stations by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and threatening to shut down their operations within 24 hours over alleged N2.6 billion debt, the Kwara State government has settled the ₦22.5 million outstanding debts owed NBC.
The Commission however later asked the stations to pay all outstanding license fees on or before August 23, 2022, or shut down by 12am on August 24.
The State Commissioner for Communication, Bode Towoju, in a statement on Wednesday, said Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, gave the approval for the immediate payment of the amount to the Commission for outstanding debts in license renewal fees for the State Broadcasting Corporation (Radio Kwara), owed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
He also disclosed that the state government had earlier paid ₦10m out of the initial ₦32.5m debts in September 2021.
“Kwara State is blessed with a responsible and highly responsive governor. This debt was passed down from the previous administrations in the state since 2006,” the statement said.
The Governor assured residents of the government’s commitment to ensuring that the state remains a moving and progressive one.
