Towards the realization of lasting peace in the country, the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) in partnership with FCT Universal Basic Education Board (FCT-UBEB) have commenced training of teachers on character building.
Declaring the workshop open in Abuja, the Sub-Regional Director, Universal Peace Federation West Africa, Rev. George Ogurie said the teachers were selected from 20 schools within the FCT to run a pilot programme.
Rev. Ogurie explained that UPF Character Education materials being use were developed in line with NERDC guidelines and adapted for Nigerian schools.
“Our aim is to train 120 teachers per state, so if you multiply 120 by 36 states plus the FCT, that will be 4,440, then add another 120 teachers that will be trained as state coordinators around the country, it will be a total of 4,560 teachers that will be trained on character education in order for us to have enough people on ground to spread this message of good values for better leadership in the country,” he said.
Also, a Deputy Director in FCT-UBEB, Esther Omaka, said the programme would be extended from primary level to secondary school until the children build their conscience for good purposes.
In a remark, Andrew Adejo, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, represented by Chief Education Officer in the ministry, Mr Fehintola Moses expressed hope in the outcome of the project.
A participant, Glory Imeh, from National Model School, Shepa, Abuja, said the training was necessary to tackle moral decadence in schools and pledged her commitment to the success of the programme.
