Eight members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, CJTF, were killed in Gamboru Ngala, Borno State, after stepping on an improvised explosive device, IED, believed to have been planted by the Islamic State of West Africa Province, ISWAP, terrorists.
The incident happened on Saturday as the CJTF members, a group of civilian volunteers who assist the Nigerian military in fighting Boko Haram and ISWAP, travelling to Maiduguri from Gamboru Ngala, a distance of 148 kilometers.
According to Zagazola Makama, a publication focused on counter-insurgency in the Lake Chad region, the IED detonation killed the CJTF members instantly.
Three other CJTF members were wounded in the explosion and were evacuated to receive medical treatment. The deceased members were transferred to their families for burial.
This attack follows a series of encounters between Nigerian forces and ISWAP in troubled Borno State. Earlier on 17th April, a commercial vehicle carrying passengers struck an IED in Borno, leaving ten dead and 20 injured.
