A military commander was tragically killed on Thursday evening in Katsina State, Nigeria.

Major A.G. Mohammed, reportedly overseeing operations in the Yantumaki, Dan Ali, and Kankara areas, was fatally shot while responding to a distress call from Malali village in Kankara Local Government Area.

Details surrounding the incident remain unclear, but sources say Major Mohammed arrived at the scene in a pickup truck, potentially due to unavailability of armoured vehicles which left him vulnerable as gunmen believed to be bandits ambushed the vehicle and shot him.

According to a resident, “Malali…is completely taken over by bandits. Whenever there is an attack the security agents usually ask for reinforcement from the Maraban Dan’Ali camp, and this new commander (Major A.G. Mohammed) would promptly respond.”

“This time around, they asked for his reinforcement and he came using a Hilux vehicle, instead of the Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), perhaps the APCs were not available at the time. Unfortunately, his assailants waylaid his vehicle and shot him in the head.”

A fierce gunfight reportedly erupted during the retrieval of Major Mohammed’s body, with another officer sustaining injuries.

This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Katsina, particularly in the Kankara Local Government Area, which has been a hotspot for bandit activity.

Military authorities have yet to officially comment on the incident.
