The British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC, has released its 2024 edition of the BBC 100 Women list, recognising Adenike Titilope Oladosu and Kauna Malgwi from Nigeria among the world’s most inspiring and influential women.
Adenike Oladosu, founder of I Lead Climate Action, is a renowned climate advocate dedicated to empowering women and youth in sustainable farming practices, especially in areas affected by shrinking water resources.
Kauna Malgwi, the chairperson of the Nigeria chapter of the Content Moderators Union, is celebrated for her work in digital content moderation.
Malgwi and Nigerian-American computer scientist Chinasa Okolo were also named in Time magazine’s 2024 list of the 100 most influential people in artificial intelligence earlier this year.
The 2024 BBC 100 Women list, themed “Resilience,” highlights women who have demonstrated extraordinary strength and adaptability in the face of challenges. It aims to spotlight those shaping the future while overcoming significant adversities globally.
Other notable figures on the list include astronaut Sunita Williams, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nadia Murad, actress Sharon Stone, and Afro-pop musician Noella Wiyaala Nwadei from Ghana.
The list also features African women such as Hala Alkarib, a Sudanese activist against sexual violence in war; Annie Sinanduku Mwange, a miner from the Democratic Republic of Congo; and Maheder Haileselassie, an Ethiopian photographer.
BBC 100 Women has also reaffirmed its commitment to exploring the climate emergency’s impact by recognising women tackling climate change globally. Among them are forest campaigner Nejla Işık from Turkey, Zambian farmer and trainer Naomi Chanda, and Malian artist Inna Modja.
The announcement kicks off the BBC 100 Women 2024 season, which will feature interviews, documentaries, and digital content showcasing the remarkable stories of resilience and hope.
Fiona Crack, Founder of BBC 100 Women, stressed the importance of celebrating these extraordinary women.
“This year, women have been at the forefront of resilience – from combating disinformation, to enduring the harsh realities of survival in conflicts like those in Sudan and Gaza, and driving political change,” she stated.
“At the BBC, we are proud to shine a spotlight on these extraordinary women, from high-profile figures to those whose remarkable contributions often go unrecognised,” she stated.
