Kano State Public Complaints and Anti–Corruption Commission arrested over 50 security personnel for allegedly extorting motorists at checkpoints during the lockdown period against COVID-19 infection, an official said.
The commission’s Chairman, Mr Muhuyi Magaji Rimigado, made the fact known in an interview with newsmen.
Rimigado said the agency’s surveillance team arrested the personnel while they were extorting motorists and allowing unauthorized persons passage during the lockdown period
He said monies recovered from such security personnel were kept as exhibits, while the suspects were detained.
The anti-corruption boss said the commission’s surveillance team mostly monitored checkpoints due to complaints from Kano residents on alleged extortion at checkpoints.
He said those arrested were caught in the act around Janguza, Gunduwawa and Gezawa areas.
Those arrested included personnel of Kano State Road Transport Agency, policemen, vigilantes, and Peace Corps members.
However, the anti-corruption boss said the culprits would be released after serious warning as they were seen as first-time offenders.
