The police commands in Oyo and Ogun States have uncovered plans by some cult groups to celebrate their annual anniversaries.
In a statement, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Nwachukwu Enwonwu, said the celebration of cult groups including ‘Aiye Confraternity’ on 7th July and Buccaneer on 8th of August every year across Southwest states had come to the notice of the command, according to the Punch.
“Adequate security measures have been emplaced to forestall any unlawful assembly and breakdown of law and order and loss of life associated with such unauthorized activities,” the statement partly read.
“The command further wishes to reassure the people that the Police in Oyo State are on top of the situation and are working assiduously to clamp down on aforementioned secret cults,” Enwonwu said.
Similarly, the police command in Ogun State said it had discovered plans by cult groups to launch a State-wide campaign of terror and violence on Tuesday, according to Daily Trust.
The spokesman of the command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the cult groups intended to initiate new members on the anniversary day and conclude the ceremony by engaging in violent confrontation with rival cult groups.
Oyeyemi said cult members would be confronted by men of the police force, also warned operators of hotels in Ogun State to not allow their facilities to be used for cult-related activities.
The West African Pilot reports residents of many communities across the Southwest are afraid of moving around on 7/7 (7th of July). In 2018, 137 Black Axe cult members were arrest at Ikorodu and Ajah communities in Lagos, while celebrating their anniversary.
