For centuries, it has been a belief that the pride of a woman is the length and lustre of her hair, but today, women adorning different low-cut styles, traditionally meant for the menfolk, have become a common sight.

Although not entirely modern, women going on low-cut is now more predominant than in the traditional society.

Traditionally, in some parts of the South-Eastern and South-Southern parts of the country, women who wear low cuts are either undergoing widowhood rites or freshly mourning the loss of their husbands. Additionally, in some parts of the country, it is taboo for women to have their hair cut so low. For people with such cultural background, therefore, it may be a shock to see women wearing low-cut as a fashion fad.

For various reasons, however, some women have embraced going on not just a low-cut, but skin cut just for their convenience and damning the traditional or religious consequences.

And when they are reminded of culture and tradition, they point to the rising cost of braiding, weapons, and other accessories attached to extension-based hairstyles. Others cite civilisation, convenience, vogue, and fashion as reasons to jettison the old ways of wearing the hair.

Just like women with low-cut are now a common sight, it is also becoming commonplace to see men with braided hair.

In today’s culture, men who wouldn’t have worn braids—even a decade ago—now embrace them, approaching the braiding style in many unique styles and patterns from box braids and cornrows to two-strand braids, and more.

Now, convenience and, mostly, fashion, are driving the previously alien culture of women going on low-cut, and even taking a step further to tint their hair with different colours of spray paint, as well as the unknown culture of men braiding their hair—a style only associated in the past with noticeably wild and uncultured women and men.

Unlike centuries ago, the fashion fad is becoming popular and acceptable by the day. Expressions and styles have changed, and men and women are taking on a fresh approach to ‘coolness’.
