The Joint Security Task Force, JTF, in Imo State has uncovered several shallow graves in Aku Community, Okigwe Local Government Area, which were allegedly used by members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and their armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network, ESN, to bury their victims.
The graves were discovered during a clearance operation aimed at dismantling criminal activities in the area.
The raid, led by Brigadier-General Usman Lawal of the 34 Artillery Brigade, also resulted in the recovery of stolen vehicles, arms, ammunition, and explosive devices.
The area, under siege by suspected IPOB leader Ifeanyi Okorienta, known as ‘Gentle’, has been notorious for kidnappings, killings, and other criminal activities over the years.
Brigadier-General Lawal, alongside the State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Joseph Ogbonna, emphasised that the operation was part of efforts to restore peace to the region.
“The operation, which has been underway for several weeks, has successfully dismantled a significant base used by the criminal group in launching violent attacks on innocent citizens and security personnel,” Henry Okoye, the police spokesperson in Imo, said.
The raid reportedly led to the arrest of 20 suspects.
Security operatives expressed optimism that the operation’s success would bring peace to the people of Aku, especially with the festive season approaching.
