Bauchi State has reversed its decision on the total lockdown of the state due to the spread of coronavirus, saying no measures taken to cushion the effect of the lockdown on the masses.

The state deputy governor senator Baba Tela during a press conference on Thursday said the decision was reversed following consultations with religious and traditional rulers.

Baba Tela said the state government was yet to receive support from the federal government to enable it to roll out palliative measures to cushion the effect associated with the shutdown order.

He said the state government will henceforth only close its borders from neighboring States while businesses will go on within the state.

Baba Tela said although the shutdown order is reversed, markets and other public places that attract large gatherings are strongly advised to maintain social distances and other measures that will curb the spread of the virus.

“We have to relax the curfew because as it’s done in other states, palliative measures where vulnerable people are supported have to be put in place, in Bauchi here, the federal government is yet to support us with such palliatives, therefore as a government we have to review these measures and ease people’s suffering”, he said.

Senator Baba Tela said the North East Development Commission through the National Centre for Disease Control has donated 1,800 Personal Protective Equipment, two ventilators, additional face masks, hand gloves, hand sanitizers and other medical consumables to help medical workers and those infected with COVID-19.

He said Tiamin Rice Company has donated 3,600 bags of rice worth over N34 million for distribution to the most vulnerable groups in the state.

The deputy governor said contact tracing and testing is ongoing in the state in order to identify possible people who might have contracted the virus.

Baba Tela urged traditional and religious leaders to continue to sensitize their followers against the dangers of the disease with the view to taming its effect.
