The African Union (AU) said it had entered a discussion with the Republic of Madagascar over the effectiveness of an herbal remedy that was recently announced by the government.

The Organization made this known in a statement that was issued on May 4 and was tweeted yesterday on its verified Tweeter.

The statement which was written in French and published on AU Website was translated to English by The West African Pilot News using Google Translate.

According to the statement, the AU Commissioner for Social Affairs had organized a meeting with the country’s authority on April 30 and the country’s authority had agreed to provide the AU the necessary details regarding the herb.

The AU further said that once the details have been provided, it will be forwarded to the African Centre for Disease Control.

The African Union promised that “This review will be based on global technical and ethical standards to gather the necessary scientific evidence regarding the performance of the tonic.

“These developments follow the participation of the Madagascan President HE Andry Rajoelina, during a teleconference meeting of the AU Conference Bureau with the Presidents of the Regional Economic Communities (RECs) of the AU, on April 29, 2020, in which he participated, as President of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), and where he made a presentation to his peers on the herbal remedy.

“The teleconference was convened by HE President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa of the Republic of South Africa and President of the African Union (AU), with the aim of informing the Presidents of the RECs of the actions and initiatives taken by the Union African response to the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on the continent. The meeting also enabled the Chairs of the RECs to inform the Bureau of the regional measures taken in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.”
