Reports indicate that an attack on the Bakta community in Shelleng Local Government Area of Adamawa state by yet to be identified gunmen has left one person dead, several others wounded.

Bakta a farming community is on the borders between Shelleng, Song, and Gombi Local Government Areas.

Though it was not reported in the media local sources say that the attack occurred on Sunday 3rd May 2020 at about 1 am.

‘’The attack appeared like Boko Haram attack, as the bandits targeted Shops and food storage facilities as well as a house to house operation asking residents to give money or be killed.

‘’ Following this attack, some residents have deserted for fear of uncertainty; there is fear everywhere, and we want concern authorities to please rescue us,’’ said a fleeing resident who simply identified himself as Baba Bakta.

Another resident who pleaded anonymity said that‘’ before now we are living in peace but recent attacks by bandits have shattered our lives and hopes.

‘’people are now living in an atmosphere of despair and uncertainty, we want the government to come to our plights.’’

 Though the Chairman of Shelleng Local Government, Hon. Muhammad Abdullahi Kedi was said to be out of town on an official engagement when the incident occurred, but a source said that his Chief of Staff with Security personnel had visited the area to ascertain the level of damages.

An aide to the local government boss also confirmed that ”The Executive Council Chairman Shelleng had delegated his Vice, Adviser on political affairs, PDP party chairman, Councillor representing Bakta Ward, the police officer to commiserate with the community.

”And the executive chairman assured that peoples’ lives and property will be safe on his administration, ” said the aide.

In the meantime, the state police spokesman DSP Suleiman Nguroje said he was yet to be briefed just as the state new commissioner of police, Olubenga Adeyanju during a maiden press conference in Yola, on Thursday assured that days of men of the underworld who have been wreaking havoc on innocent people across the state are numbered.

“Members of the public are our partners in crime-fighting. The command will synergize and cooperate with both state and non-state actors to form a common formidable frontier against crime and criminality in Adamawa State.

” The police cannot achieve much without the support of the community through information sharing, logistics support, adherence to laws of the country, etc.

” Some of our strategies in enhancing community policing is the intensification of both vehicular and foot patrols, outreach in schools, religious centers, markets, motor parks, etc,’’ he assured.
