NewsTaraba Judge Harassed Journalists, Ceases NTA Camera

An Upper Area Court Judge in Jalingo, the Taraba state capital, Barr. Bulus Nyiputen has ceased a camera belonging to NTA Jalingo.

The NTA news crew alongside other Journalists from the Correspondents’ Chapel and other state media were in the court premises to cover a case before the Judge which involved the Village Head of Karim Lawan, Mohammed Topi in Karim Lamido local government area of Taraba state with his 19 subjects.

However, when the NTA cameraman was filming the court premises and the Judge called him into the court hall and asked him to drop his camera and leave.

It could be recalled that earlier the Judge, Barr. Bulus Nyiputen prevented journalists access to the court when the matter first came up for mentioning and the counsel to the complainant, Barr. Sunday was seen harassing the NTA reporter claiming to link him to the offense if he dares report the case.

Investigations revealed that the Village Head of Karim Lawan, Mohammed Topi sued 19 of his subjects when they wrote petition against him over his reckless selling of their farmlands which they described as injustice.

In recent times there has been incessant harassment of journalists in the state and disturbed by the trend, the state chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ)  had warned government officials in the state to desist from harassing Journalists while carrying out their legitimate duties.

Jovita Shafe, Chairman of the union gave the warning at the official Handing Over Ceremony to the newly sworn-in executive officials of the Taraba state Correspondent’s chapel in Jalingo, stressed the need to engage the media practitioners in a robust partnership to enhance public awareness on government programmes in the state.

He warned that henceforth, the media would not tolerate the unwholesome attitude of government officials towards the media practitioners in the state.
