The Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in collaboration with a USAID funded project, Breakthrough Action Nigeria, has staged a COVID-19 and tuberculosis awareness campaign at the central motor park, Muda Lawal in Bauchi State.

Professor Tajudeen Baruwa, the National President and leaders of  NURTW in Bauchi, said the campaign was to enlighten motorists on how to curb the spread of coronavirus and tuberculosis.

Professor Tajudeen said motor parks by their nature usually houses many people at a time, hence the need to sensitize people by creating more awareness on how to prevent the spread of tuberculosis and COVID-19 in the society.

“At this critical time, we have to join hands with the NGO to create awareness on the deadly diseases called Coronavirus and Tuberculosis.

“We cannot leave this to the government alone, we all must rise up to the occasion, this is a global pandemic and everyone should be involved in curbing its spread”, he said.

Professor Tajudeen described COVID-19 and TB as deadly diseases that should be taken seriously.

The President said the Union has introduced disinfectant spread devices and security tracking devices for use in motor parks across the country.

He urged union members to respect government policies, warning them not to carry the law into their hands by reporting any suspicious movements to authorities.

Mr. Usman Inuwa, the state coordinator Breakthrough Action Nigeria Said Motor parks are the right place that needs enlightenment on the coronavirus and tuberculosis, which according to him have similarities in symptoms.

“We thought Motor parks are good places for us to actually get as many people as possible to pass the information on tuberculosis because the level of awareness in Nigeria is quite low.

“Our message is that tuberculosis is an airborne disease but treatable and curable.

“The federal government, with support from partners, have actually made available both the diagnostic tools and the medication (treatment) free”, Inuwa said.

He said Break Through Action is collaborating with NURTW to intensify the campaign against TB with the view to ending the disease in Nigeria.

Inuwa said the project has made adequate provision for free testing and referrals for TB, hoping that such will motivate people to test their status on TB.
