The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yola, Adamawa State capital, has again set a record with yet another breakthrough as a team of surgeons led by the Chief Medical Director of the centre, Prof Auwal Abubakar, successfully separated eight-month-old conjoined female twins.

The eight –months old twins are named: Grace and Mercy and held from Nembe local government area of Bayelsa State, South-South Nigeria.

Our correspondent recalls that earlier this year, the Civil-Military Relations Unit of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in furtherance of its humanitarian commitments airlifted the set of conjoined twins along with their parents and a medical team from Yenagoa, in Bayelsa State, to Yola, for the surgery.

Speaking at an organized event to celebrate the successful separation of the conjoined twin, Mr. Auwal, a Professor of Paediatric Surgery, commenting on this development said that the team of professionals that were deployed for the surgery included surgeons, anesthetics, radiologists, laboratory scientists, preoperative nurses, and cleaners.

“We have a successful separation of conjoined female twins. This development was recorded following teamwork by different medical units.

Prof Auwal Abubakar successfully separated eight-month-old conjoined female twins.

‘’The surgery was conducted on August 10, and the chances of survival of the twins are excellent,’’ he said.

The director said it took his team four hours to perform the operation which was the third  of its kind in the hospital.

To this end, Mr. Auwal said Nigeria had medical personnel that could compete with their counterparts in developed countries.

‘’ The mission of this centre among others is to serve as a comprehensive referral centre, providing qualitative, effective, efficient, patient-focused, affordable health care services to patients and clients in Adamawa state and its environs.

‘’With support, the centre is determined to be the best institution of tertiary health care service in the North-East zone and one of the top ten (10) tertiary health care centres in the country as a whole,’’ he pointed out.

While fielding questions from reporters, both the father and mother of the twins, Rapheal Ayebaieinemi and Ayebekipereye Ebiyefa,  all thanked the management of the hospital for also writing off the bill for the surgery.

‘’ Initially, we were scared about the survival of the twins, but now glory be to God, the hospital successfully separated them.

‘’ We are grateful to management and staff of the hospital and also the Nigeria Airforce for their tremendous help,’’ the mother Ayebekipereye Ebiyefa added.
