The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Mr. Edward Kallon has disclosed that nineteen Resident UN agencies are willing to support the state government through funds and programmes in addressing various challenges through an integrated approach that builds on each agency’s comparative advantage.

Kallon who revealed this when he led a delegation on a courtesy call on Governor Ahamdu Umaru Finitir at the Government House, Yola, explained that the visit to the state is to listen, learn, engage and support the government and the people of Adamawa towards improving living standards in the state.

“I commend the efforts of the state government in combating HIV/AIDS even during these difficult times, Adamawa is the best in the Northeast working towards prevention of mother -to -child transmission of HIV.

” I called on the government to accelerate the passage of ongoing legislations in the state Assembly and domesticate the Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Act, the Child Rights Act and Violence against Persons, VAP Act”. He added.

Responding, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri said Adamawa is benefitting from interventions of the UN and its agencies in the areas of early recovery, water, education, health, agriculture, and child protection among others, assuring and that government shall collaborate with the partners.

He expressed hope that the visit by the UN delegation will unlock more opportunities of support in scaling up the development of the state regional and transborder infrastructure, economic development, and COVID-nineteen management plan among others.

Fintiri revealed that the government will soon engage contractors to commence rehabilitation of six general hospitals as part of measures to improve secondary healthcare system in Adamawa.

“Government has also awarded contract for building of four new sixty-bed cottage hospitals in Adamawa in addition to granting approval for employment of over one thousand technical workers for primary healthcare centres.

“Government has ensured that the State Specialist Hospital Yola is headed by a senior consultant and this has attracted twelve consultants and eight medical officers in various areas on visiting basis”. Fintiri averred.

“This administration has also provided a modern accident and emergency unit, improved laboratory services with modern equipment, and upgraded theatre and laundry services, installed about seven ventilators as well as provided new ambulances and hospital furniture in the specialist hospital Yola”. He added.

He said over the past year, the government has invested in laying an intellectual foundation and crafting a compass for achieving its eleven-point agenda on education, water, infrastructural development, youths, and women empowerment.
