Donald Trump, former United States president, says he has no reason to return to Twitter after the new Twitter boss, Elon Musk, lifted the ban on his account.

Trump’s account on the social media platform was permanently suspended on 8 January 2021 following the attack by his supporters on the US Capitol that left several people dead. The suspension cut Trump off from his nearly 90 million followers on Twitter.

Trump’s account, however, reappeared on Twitter on Saturday after Musk conducted a poll, allowing users to vote either for or against the former president’s reinstatement.

The poll garnered 15,085,458 votes. While 52 per cent voted in favour of the reinstatement, 48 per cent voted against it. “The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated. Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” Musk tweeted at the end of the votes.

Aljazeera reports that when asked whether he planned to return to Twitter by a panel at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s annual leadership meeting, Trump replied, “I don’t see any reason for it.”

He said he would stick with his own social media platform, Truth Social, which is an almost carbon copy of Twitter. According to him, Truth Social has better user engagement than Twitter and was doing “phenomenally well”.

As of the time of writing this report, a blue-tick verified @realDonaldTrump Twitter account is live with 72.4 million followers.

The West African Pilot reports that Trump’s reinstatement comes four days after he declared his intention to run for president again in 2024.
