Crime & SecurityNewsNigeriaPolice Brutality: Judicial Panel of Inquiry Inaugurated In Adamawa

In line with the directives of the National Economic Council for State Governments to constitute judicial panel of inquiry into alleged brutality of the Anti-Robbery Squad SARS following the nationwide protest, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State Thursday inaugurated the Eleven Member Judicial Panel of Inquiry.

The panel is headed by retired High Court Judge, Justice Adamu Hobon, the Permanent Secretary Security is to serve as a Secretary while retired Assistant Inspector General of Police AIG Ibrahim Baba Ahmed and Barrister Samuel Yaumande Solicitor General and representative of Ministry of Justice will serve as members.

Other members are His Lordship Bishop Japheth Tonmwason representative of Christian Association of Nigeria CAN member and Alhaji Wakili Usman Ibrahim representative of Muslim Council of Nigeria MCN,Grace Mamza representative of Human Rights Commission, James Kamale President Student Union Government SUG of Modibbo Adamawa University of Technology MAUTECH, Yola who is the representative of Students.

Other members include Ambassador Ajeni Delo representative of Youth Organizations, Barrister Nafisatu Bala from Red Cross Society of Nigeria RCSN and representative of Civil Society, Hajiya Tanee Kabiru Bitoko from NCWS and representative of civil society.

At the event that was held in the Government House Yola, Governor Fintiri said the council has also approved the setting of a Special Base Security and Human Rights Committee to be chaired by a Governor and Human Rights Committee to supervise the newly formed Police Tactical Units and other security agencies in various states.

“The terms of reference of the panel include receiving and investigating complaints on Police brutality or related extra-judicial killings, evaluating evidence presented and other circumstances and establishing the nature of the abuses.

“Establish whether or not there are individuals in custody and reason why they are kept in custody establish whether they have been arraigned in court or they are not and how many as well as establish how many died in custody.

 “Establish incidences of financial and material extortions, damages caused and determine any compensation to be paid to the victims or their relations while the panel has six months from the date of inauguration to submit its report”. He said

Fintiri further said “The council mandated state governments to set up a complaint office where members of the public can relate by telephone or social media while members of the office shall liaise with heads of security agencies to resolve complaints from the public”.

Responding, the Chairman of the Panel, Retired Justice Adamu Hobon thanked the Governor for finding worthy to serve in that capacity and assured that they will comply strictly to the terms of reference to justify the confidence reposed in them.

He appealed to the public to respond and appear to testify what they know from their personal knowledge without sentiment while the media should report correctly on the activities of the commission where need arises.
