LAGOS — The former Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, has condemned politicians who usually decamp from one political party to others, describing it as an ugly Nigerian politician culture.
The Senator added that Nigerians will be shocked as to the number of politicians that will cross-carpet next between now and next year ahead of the 2023 general elections.
The lawmaker representing Bayelsa-West in the National Assembly, made this comment on Wednesday while featuring in an interview programme on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” monitored by Eko Hot Blog, saying the country has not reached its peak with respect to the decamping season.
17 months to the 2023 General Election, Dickson predicted that more politicians would cross-carpet from one political party to others.
Prominent figures in the main opposition, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), the recent was the Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi, who led the league of the PDP governors to the ruling APC.
Not too long, Governor Ben Ayade of Cross Rivers and his Zamfara State counterpart, Matawalle Bello, followed suit, even with the fact that they were being elected under the PDP.
On Wednesday, a member of the PDP’s Board of Trustee, Senator Joy Emordi, also dumped the opposition for the ruling APC.
But Dickson during the interview said, “Between now and the peak of the decamping season which will be next year, you will be shocked how many people will move either this way or that way,” he said.
“Don’t be surprised to see a lot of chicken coming home to roost, don’t be surprised to see some other birds of passage flocking around. That is what we have come to know.
“Is it the right thing to do? No. Is that the way to deepen our democracy, no? Does that speak well of our democratic structure, no? Unfortunately, that is the ugly reality we have to deal with.”
