YOLA –– The Adamawa Chapter of Muslim Council has confirmed that at least 34 persons were killed during a  two days ethnic violence erupted in Tigno village of Lamurde local government area, as 48 sustained gunshots, calling on the government to probe the mayhem.

Police said they have so far recovered six bodies. The police had earlier said there were no deaths in the fighting.

The council also noted with dismay the continuous ethnic clashes plaguing the state in recent times.

Abdullahi Njidda Damare, the spokesperson of the council in a telephone chat on Sunday said that those with critical injuries were hurriedly rushed to the state specialist hospital in Yola, adding that they were recuperating.

‘’ Available records indicate that so far 34 persons were confirmed dead, though there are some missing or yet to be ascertained of their whereabouts.

‘’ Already 48 patients mostly with gunshots were admitted at the Yola Specialist hospital, and they are recuperating as at the time of our visit.

‘’ We rendered some assistance and the state government had equally pledged to shoulder the medical expenses,’’ said he.

Damare said reports reaching them indicate that normalcy has been restored with the deployment of anti-riot police and soldiers in the crisis-ridden community.

‘’ As at this time, residents confirmed that there is normalcy amid tight security; deployment of soldiers and mobile police really helps a lot in restoring peace in the area.’’

While prevailing on the need for the government to provide food assistance to displaced persons and other affected residents, Damare asked the warring communities to sheath swords.

‘’No need for finger-pointing and blame-trade; because it’s unfortunate violence,  that could have been managed and resolve amicably.

 ‘’So, Council will today hold a crucial meeting on ways towards resolving the matter.

Violence erupted on Thursday following a disagreement between some Hausa youths and Chabo tribe community after the former accidentally hit the latter with motorcycle.

Barely 24 hours after this ethnic violence erupted in Tigno, another tragedy occurred after  yet to be identified gunmen struck at Mbemun,a fishing community in  same Lamurde Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

While leading key stakeholders on an assessment visit to Mbemun community, the state governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri reiterated government determination to ensure that its citizens across nooks and crannies of the state sleep with their two eyes closed.

In the meantime,  police spokesperson in the state, Suleiman Nguroje, said the visit of the governor had calmed the warring parties in the two affected villages.

 He said there was a heavy security presence in the areas to ensure peace and order.
