Amid spread of the second wave of coronavirus pandemic, Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa state has declared that there will be no more lockdown in the state, calling on the citizens to observe social distancing and abide by COVID-19 protocols.

This is coming in the wake of a significant increase in the number of infections from the coronavirus disease witnessed in the state recently.

Speaking to a newsman in Yola, on Thursday, the governor said, ‘’ There will be no lockdown as far as I am concerned. But the committee and the government is doing their best to see that we further enlighten our people to brace up and to ensure that we keep –up with the COVID-19 protocols, so that we   remain safe in the state as well as safe in the entire nation.’’

He further reiterated that ‘’ This is my wish but I wouldn’t lock down the state for whatever reason that’s why I am one of the state governors that have opened our institutions since January 11, and believe the Federal government later followed suit. We instructed that schools be opened by January 18.

‘’In Adamawa, we have all the basic tools and I will further direct that all higher institutions be opened soon in the state.

‘’But I will ask that all citizens should abide by the rules and regulations, and protocols of COVID-19 be adhered to. And I want to further assure everyone that it’ s not yet time for politicking and so, the best interest of our state,’’ he warned.

The state has last week recorded 50 new cases of the coronavirus, the highest recorded in a day so far. This number has however dropped significantly with the last new infection of 26 persons recorded on the 10th of January, 2021.

The state now has a total of 494 infections with 233 on admission, 238 discharged while 26 people lost the battle against the disease.

Governor Fintirri had recently reiterated the need for citizens to observe all the nonpharmaceutical protocols in order to stop the spread of the virus.

‘’The lives of our people shall be paramount and is the most important at the moment. So, we should keep away from gatherings that will spread the pandemic in the state. When it’s time for politics, we all know how to do it; where to do it and how to start it.’’ Fintiri added.
