The United Nations representative on Spotlight Initiative Dr. Graci Ilori has appealed to government and non-governmental organizations to put an end to gender-based violence against women with disabilities in the country.
She made the call during a press conference to commemorate this year’s International Women’s Day organized by the UN in collaboration with Spotlight Initiative held at Tufini Hotel Jimeta.
“During Covid-19 pandemic, women and girl’s child have been exacerbated in the country.
“The UN report recently showed that women are Heads of States in twenty-two countries and twenty-two point nine percent are parliamentarian,” she said.
Ilori urged the government to provide basic amenities to women living with disabilities in the country and commended Adamawa state government on its efforts to fight violence against women in society.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Executive Director Voice of Disabilities Initiative Barr Catherine Chinyere, said the day is to commemorate the political, social and economic achievements of women.
She advised Nigerians to work together towards empowering women.
On their part, focal women with disabilities, Mrs. Godiya Simon, and Fancy Falluma Vanco expressed their appreciation to spotlight initiative and Voice of Disability Initiative for organizing the event and urged government and individuals to assist them by providing vocational skills training among other social amenities.
