Ahead of school resumption, the Adamawa state government has on Tuesday threatened to sanction any school that violates the enshrined COVID -19 protocols.
The statement government had earlier slated October 12, for the schools resumption across 21 local government areas in the state.
The Commissioner of Education and Human Capital Development Mrs Wulbina Jackson who dropped the hint at a meeting of stakeholders in the education sector said that the aim of the meeting was to draw out modalities on the reopening.
Mrs Jackson charged the stakeholders to redouble their efforts and ensure that pupils and students are well taken care of while in school.
” As stipulated in the NCDC’s COVID- 19 guidelines, any school found wanting or violating the protocols will be sanctioned seriously.
” To this end, we want to appeal to school authorities to monitor students and ensure compliance to NCDC directives especially washing of hands with soap under running water, use of hand sanitizers, and wearing of face masks.
” The ministry will go round school to supervise compliance to COVID-19 protocols, warning that schools that violate the safety protocols would be sanctioned,” she said.
In their separates presentations Dr Fahad Muhammad of the Nigeria Center for Disease Control, NCDC, as well as Dr. Pembi Emmanuel from the Ministry of Health all prevailed on the need for strict compliance.
Dr Fahad said that critical steps should be considered before reopening of school which includes engaging the community in the reopening plan, target resources to where they are most needed, and make the school environment safe before getting students back to school.
“Parental consent forms for COVID -19 testing for pupils/students be obtained from the office of the DIE in each Local Government Area.
” School hygiene team/focal person be set up by the school to ensure good linkage with the Public Health System.
” Provision of WASH facilities in all schools, Hand hygiene sanitation, and PPE.
” Ensure screening facilities /temperature check at school entrance for both staff, pupils and teachers. Hygiene education should be provided to all staff, pupils and students.
” Ensure inspection team to monitor compliance at all level. Communication channels with all parents and stakeholders should be maintained.
” Social protection (lending of writing materials and other experiment equipment should be reduced or prohibited),” the NCDC official noted.
